Functional
principle
Eddy current
sensors are used for measurement of distances, vibrations, rotations and
frequencies of
target. They can also be used for counting parts e.g. on a belt.
The function of eddy current sensors is based on the principle that changes in
an electrical conductive
material as impurities or defects create changes of the
electrical field. Due to the superior environment
resistance e.g. against dust,
oil, dirt the eddy current sensors are especially suited for applications in
the
industrial field.
A coil inside the sensor head is supplied with high-frequency current to
generate a high-frequency
electromagnetic field in the target. As long as no
alteration like changes of distance, changes of material
specification appears
these generated electromagnetic field is a homogeneous one without any
change.
When the material properties changes the eddy current density increases or
decreases according
to the type of material changes.
The sensor system detects the change in oscillation strength resulting from
above described
phenomenon to identify the relationship between displacement and
voltage.
Hence, changes of the target can be detected fast and precise. The principle
works as long as the
target is metallic. Please note that both the sensitivity
and measuring range are dependent on the
material of the target.
